Berta Calderon

We finally made it back to the cancer hospital today. After three weeks of telling our friend Martha that we would come back to finish cutting hair, we finally returned to Berta Calderon hospital. Martha is a missionary at this hospital in the women's cancer center, she has been there for 4 years now. This section of the hospital houses women who are in remission and/or are going home soon. We came to know this ministry through Rip. When we first visited this place, Martha asked us if we could get any donations of beauty products (combs, brushes, hairdryers, towels, haircutting scissors etc.). Many of you donated more than enough of the supplies needed but sadly to say they were all stolen when Rusty (Delanie's boyfriend) got robbed in Costa Rica. But we have kept our heads up and ask again if you are being lead to donate any of the above items to send down with the missions team from Poplar Creek Church that will be coming down to Nica this Monday.

As you have read, our plate has been filled with many missions and adventures so it had been quite some time since we had last visited Martha and her ministry. We came to the hospital today and Delanie got to cut 8 heads of follicles. They were all very happy with their new stylish do's and Delanie felt that she had finally accomplished her mission here at Berta Calderon. Priscilla and Keydi helped out by doing the usual translating. We also got to talk to Martha and get to know her on a deeper level and how she was called to work with this hospital and these brave, amazing women. Martha is such a fighter and has such a strong relationship with God. Please pray for this ministry and the women who are fighting cancer.

We are planning to go to an English church service tomorrow and we are super pumped about it! We really haven't gone to a service where we felt we got a full serving of spiritual food so we hope that tomorrow will fill us up. Charity (New Hope Children's Foundation) invited us to come with her to this church and we said yes right away! We now have 10 days left before we are home!

I am today what yesterday has made me; tomorrow I shall be changed by today's experiences.

Back On Schedule

We started off today by driving to the town of El Crucero to cut some hair. Charity asked us to come to her place (New Hope Children's Foundation) today to chop off a few of the girls' hair so Delanie went to work right away. The babies who were at the hospital last week are better/back home and we want to thank you for all of your prayers because they helped! Ofelia is still sick but is doing better than before.

We picked up Caitlin in Masatepe in the early afternoon and brought her back to Managua. She has officially taught for an entire week in Nicaragua! When we came home our friend Andrea dropped by and Delanie cut her hair. She absolutely loved it and we chilled with her for a while around the kitchen table. We drove Andrea back to her home at a Christian University where she is a missionary. As we were driving back from dropping Andrea off we saw Keydi sitting outside of her house. We pulled over and she showed us her home and introduced us to her family, it was so great to finally meet them!

In the evening we drove to Casa Bernabe to watch our friends lead a worship service. It was really neat to watch Freydel (Delanie's sister) play the drums. Jonathan and Maryuri sang beautifully and Stanley played the bongos. It was so great to see the teens praising God. We were beat from doing so much during the day so we didn't stick around long and drove home after the service.

On our way home we got pulled over again. Priscilla made the same mistake she did the last time - turning into the far lane instead of the closest. The police thought we were quite entertaining and made fun of Priscilla's Mexican accent. He also thought she was 18 years old and almost didn't believe that her real age is 25. Priscilla laughed the whole time and made jokes with the officers, it was actually very entertaining. They asked who's car we were driving and after telling them it belonged to a church and that we are missionaries they let us go without a ticket!!! It was worth looking like foolish, young, American girls tonight!

It was a busy busy day but we accomplished so much and that feels so good. Tomorrow we are planning to visit the cancer hospital to spend some time with the patients and cut hair. Caitlin will be with us for this as well! Yay! Thanks for all of your prayers! Peace out.

I am today what yesterday has made me; tomorrow I shall be changed by today's experiences.

M, T, W, Th

The past four days have been filled with insane adventures with our guests. We "got rid" of the lasts guest this morning. We have not blogged due to the busyness so here are our events of the week in chronological order...

Monday:
Priscilla, Delanie, Rusty, Paul, and MK went to a VIP movie at the theater where you get your own recliner, table and food/drink service during the entire film. After the movie we picked up Caitlin from Masatepe and visited a town called Granada. It is a colonial city in history and architecture. We attempted to eat dinner at a restaurant on the beach but they had none of the items listed on their menu. We ended up at a little place called Imagine which had great food. We had a blast.

Tuesday:
We drove Paul and MK to the Ticabus station in the morning after a hearty McDonalds breakfast. Afterwards, Delanie, Priscilla, and Rusty went to Casa Bernabe so that Rusty could meet Delanie's sisters as well as the other friends at the orphanage. In the evening, we went to a couple of bars/restaurants and caused complete mayhem (just kidding!). It was great to go out at night since we always come home by sunset!

Wednesday:
Priscilla, Delanie, and Rusty drove to Masatepe to pick up Caitlin and came back to Managua to go to the movies. We watched Knight and Day which proved that Tom Cruise still looks decent and Cameron Diaz is looking a bit saggy. It wasn't that great of a movie, we don't recommend it. When the movie was over we stuck around and chilled out at a bar/restaurant for a while. It was nice to let go and laugh/be goofy together. We drove Caitlin home in the evening and continued the goofiness when we got home. We didn't go to sleep until 4:30 in the morning which was a baaaad idea...read Thursday now...

Thursday:
We had to drive Rusty to the airport this morning and we left the house by 6:00 a.m. We were on one hour of sleep and didn't even know how to get to the airport. After asking our guard and several strangers on the street for directions, we got Rusty there on time. We prayed and said goodbye to our last guest. Driving while exhausted is kind of yucky and we got lost on the way home. It seemed like an eternity had passed by the time we got to come home and crash for a few hours. We woke up at 2:00 p.m., went grocery shopping, and just finished working out.

It was great having friends come to our house this week. We did a lot of driving, laughing, eating, and getting lost. It feels a bit strange to be alone again but our busy schedule is back on track so stay tuned tomorrow. Oh, by the way, we only have 12 days left!

I am today what yesterday has made me; tomorrow I shall be changed by today's experiences.

Costaraguans

Yesterday was quite a day, we did a lot with our new guests and it got too late to blog, get over it. Our first mission of the day was to pick up our three guests, Mary Katherine (MK), Rusty (Delanie's boyfriend), and Paul (Rusty's brother). We drove to the Ticabus station in the morning and waited anxiously. MK was going to arrive at the bus station first and we did not know what she looked like, so we made a sign to find our new friend. After putting the sign in everyone's face we finally found her! She is super sweet. She goes to the same school as Paul in Costa Rica. Next were the boys. Rusty and Paul arrived shortly after MK and Delanie was on cloud 9 to be with her boyfriend again. MK introduced us to her friends Hannah and Adam who said they were going to a town in Nica via bus but the ride to get to the other bus station was going to be difficult. Priscilla knew where the station was offered to drive them there. We were very happy to be united with fellow gypsies.

The bus station where Hannah and Adam were getting dropped off at was located inside of a market. As Priscilla drove in to the parking lot she hit a taxi. Yes, this is true folks. It wasn't bad at all and the woman who owned the taxi was very nice and understanding. After agreeing that getting the police involved would not be much fun, Priscilla paid the lady money to replace her broken light and the problem was solved. Phew! When that ordeal was over the whole lot of us walked through the market in search of the bus station. We found the station and bid farewell to our friends and sent them on their way.

Lunch at the mall was the next step in our day. We went to a restaurant that is similar to what we know in the states as Buffalo Wild Wings. We got a chance to talk to Rusty, Paul, and MK about their travels and adventures in Costa Rica. We compared Costa and Nica and had a great time unwinding from the busy morning.

After eating we came home to let our guests rest. They loved our home and especially our hammocks. We all spent a lazy afternoon chatting away. Cailtlin made everyone a delicious dinner of chicken, noodles, and vegetables. When we were done eating we drove Caitlin to Masatepe so that she could be well rested to teach this week. We hope to see her sometime soon because she has definitely become a lifelong friend! We are pumped about having guests in our house and we will write about our adventures today when we get home!

I am today what yesterday has made me; tomorrow I shall be changed by today's experiences.

Back To The Market

Today we went to the market for Caitlin to experience some more of Nicaragua. Priscilla and Delanie have been to the market a million times but we were pumped to show Caitlin a legit market experience. We have found our way to the Wembis market so that's the one we ended up in. Our friend Keydi was already at our house this morning so we invited her to come along.

Caitlin loved the experience at the market and may have spent more money than she wanted to! She learned how to bargain and appreciate all of the wonderful hand made items that the markets have to offer. Shopping takes a lot out of a girl, so we left after three hours. I think we are also pooped from all that has happened in the past week.

We are now at home and just ate a delicious home cooked meal made by wonderful Keydi. We enjoyed our day and are incredibly blessed to have met Caitlin. She is definitely our kin and doesn't get freaked out by the weirdness that is Prilanie. In fact, she embraces it and joins along! We know our paths were meant to cross and God wanted us to create this beautiful friendship. Again we ask that you pray for Caitlin's teaching job in Masatepe that starts on Monday. Today was a great day!

His Hands and Feet

Our missions yesterday and today lasted and eternity. We are beat beyond belief, but blogging our adventure anyway. We have only had a few hours of sleep in the past couple of days and I'm surprised our new guest Caitlin hasn't gotten on the first flight home from this crazy place. So, here it goes...

We were eating breakfast yesterday morning when all of a sudden Priscilla saw Octavio in their front yard. Octavio was our night guard/friend and he disappeared one day which made us very sad! We bought him a new pair of Nike's but couldn't give them to him since we had no way of contacting him. When Priscilla saw him outside of the window she screamed and ran out to hug him. He got fired from his job here for some supposed fishy reason. We gave him his shoes and he was very grateful. It was so nice to see his face light up! Our shoe mission is complete.

In the afternoon we headed for the hospitals to take care of the babies for a second time. Priscilla dropped Delanie off at the first hospital to take care of Leoito and Jelka. Caitlin and Priscilla drove to the second hospital (called Mascota) to take care of Ofelia. The three of us had the night shift from 6:30 p.m. (Thursday) to 9:00 a.m. (Friday). It's definitely a rough shift but we all survived.

Delanie was responsible for the primary care of Jelka and Leoito who both have pneumonia. Leoito would scream whenever he saw a doctor and Jelka was fussy, but a bit calmer. Leoito needed to use a nebulizer mask but was very resistant. Charity believes that he didn't like the mask in his face because it brought back memories of his step father drowning him in the river. Leoito is facing post traumatic stress disorder. Please pray for his recovery as well as Jelka's. Delanie ended up sleeping for about and hour on the tile floor of the hospital room. Getting peed on by Leoito did not make things easier but she continued to nurture him throughout the night. She was challenged with her stay at the hospital, but was very happy to be there with Jelka and Leoito. Her motherly instincts definitely kicked in.

Priscilla and Caitlin were in charge of Ofelia. Ofelia is weak, malnourished, closed off, and depressed. She was brutally abused and is now trying to fight pneumonia and has been for the last couple of weeks. She is four years old and weighs an astonishing 12 pounds. She does not make eye contact or interact much. She can't walk, talk, or feed herself. We spent the night taking care of her every need. The other baby sharing the room cried for about 10 out of the 12 hours we were there. Sleeping was not an option, especially when you need to be alert when the doctors come in, and when the other babies in the ward sound like wild animals at the zoo that will not stop crying. We slept for about an hour on the dirty tile floor on top of a sheet. It was tough. The icing on the cake was when Ofelia peed all over Priscilla in the morning when a bath was attempted in a 6 inch wide sink.

Phew, I told you it was intense, and it doesn't even end there! We came home from the hospital around 10:00 a.m. this morning and got ready to take Caitlin to Masatepe to have her interview with the principal at the school she will be teaching at for the next month. Priscilla did the translating and introduced her to the teachers/staff at El Centro De Fe, Esperanza, Y Amor. We talked to the teachers for quite a while and must have sounded so unstable and crazy after the night we went through. Caitlin received materials with the curriculum she will be teaching and plans on studying them this weekend. She is excited for her job opportunity and so are all of the wonderful teachers at the church/school. She will start to teach this Monday. Please pray for her and her calling to be here!

After driving home for 45 minutes from Masatepe (which was probably so foolish on an hour of sleep) we came home feeling drained. But do you think that stopped us? No. We worked out for about 20 minutes, ate, and took showers. It was only after this that we finally fell asleep. This was a very busy week, to say the least, but this is why we are here. Our missions in the last couple of days were a challenge and we saw God stretching and growing us. God is good and provided all the strength and energy needed. We feel honored to have been His hands and feet.

I am today what yesterday has made me; tomorrow I shall be changed by today's experiences.

On Call

We did not get a chance to blog last night because we came home at 12:00 a.m. Yesterday was a day of being stretched to the limit. We started off by going to the airport to pick up Caitlin at 11:45 a.m. After waiting for an hour we began to get worried. Finally, her plane landed at around 1:00. We had never met Caitlin so we only had a physical description to go by. We spotted her after what seemed like forever and we were unsuccessful at making eye contact. Out last attempt was waving like a bunch of maniacs while jumping up and down and screaming her name. She found us and we were very happy to meet such a sweet girl. The crazy thing is, her flight was delayed because there was an emergency on the plane! The landing gear was not working and they told the passengers that they would have to make an emergency landing. They prepared to have a dangerous impact with explosions and all. It was complete hysteria as all the passengers were panicked and fearful that this was the end for them all. Children were crying, Caitlin was holding the hand of the person sitting next to her as they prayed, it was complete mayhem. Thank the Lord they landed alright and nothing happened. But you can just imagine how Caitlin felt as she left that airplane ready to meet people she doesn't even know in a country she's never even been to! Talk about a trooper, right?!?!

While we were waiting for Caitlin at the airport we got a phone call from our friend Charity. Charity is the girl who runs New Hope Children's Foundation. Two of the babies that they recently rescued were extremely ill and at the hospital Mascota in Managua. There needs to be an adult with these babies in the room at all times and Charity was in desperate need of volunteers. The people who had been with the babies were burnt out after being there for countless days and nights with no food or rest. We said we'd be at the hospital as soon as possible and off we went . There is only supposed to be one adult per baby but they allowed Caitlin to come with Priscilla in the room with baby Ofelia. She has pneumonia and is still fighting a fever along with being very malnourished. Priscilla and Caitlin were told that they'd be there for a few hours but ended up staying at the hospital from 4:30-11:00 p.m. We weren't surprised or angry just exhausted and starving. It was great to be able to serve and be a blessing to Charity and her wonderful organization. We played, fed, rocked, changed, loved, and slept with Ofelia. She is such a strong, brave little soul. Please pray for her recovery as well as Jelka's, the other baby at the hospital with Pneumonia. Also pray for this hospital and its workers as they are extremely overbooked and had two babies die just yesterday. They need prayers for strength, wisdom, and patience to work lengthy, exhausting hours.

While all this hospital business was happening, Delanie had to be separated from Priscilla. She was told that she couldn't be at the hospital because of the number of people that could be in a room and they already had volunteers to be with Jelka and Ofelia. This has never happened to us and it was like involuntarily ripping our souls in half. We have never be apart while in Nicaragua and it was our golden rule to always stay together. This situation caused us to split and we knew we were in good hands and it wasn't going to be possible to stay together. So, Delanie went with Charity, her husband Leo, and their friend Jocelyn. She helped at their house taking care of the children, serving dinner, washing the dishes, and driving around with Alex picking up people for shifts at the hospital. She had quite an adventurous and emotional day and was drained by the time she came back to the hospital to reunite with Priscilla and Caitlin.

It was such an intense day but we did what we were called to do and were there for the people who needed us. We were supposed to take Caitlin to Masatepe this morning but after yesterday we knew she needed some sleep to gain back her sanity. We slept in today and feel rested. We are supposed to go back to the hospital this afternoon/evening and do the all night shift. That means we will be there from about 6:00p.m-6:00a.m. Please pray for our day/night at the hospital as it will definitely be a challenge on the body, mind, and soul. Thanks for all of your support! And sorry for the lengthy blog, it was a loooong day.

P.S. We forgot our camera at home so there will be no pictures for your viewing pleasure. Don't worry, we are bringing it today!

I am today what yesterday has made me; tomorrow I shall be changed by today's experiences.

Busy Busy Busy

Today was a busy, busy day! We started off by going to Masatepe in the morning to finish our haircuts. We got there at 11:00 and Delanie worked her butt off to accomplish the three teachers left. They were very happy with their do's and we got to spend some quality time with the staff from the church/school. Delanie felt great to finally be done with this mission here at El Centro De Fe, Esperanza, Y Amor.

After driving back home from Masatepe for 40 minutes in the rain we decided to go on an adventure. We really wanted to go to the market and pick out a present for Delanie's sister, Freydel. We have been to several different markets here in Nicaragua but never really payed attention to where there exact locations are. We made a phone call to our friend Isbel and after getting vague directions we took off. Low and behold, we found the market! We were very proud of this and felt like real Nicaraguans. We spent a couple of hours shopping for Freydel's present among other things. The market is always a fun yet exhausting trip but we are glad we went.

By the time we got home from our busy day we wanted to just unwind. Too bad that was not possible! We made plans to "eat dinner" with our families through skype and had to rush to figure out what we were going to eat. After two failing attempts to order a pizza Delanie cooked chili dogs and we finally got to enjoy our meal.

Tomorrow morning we are picking up Caitlin, and intern of Rip's that will be teaching in Masatepe for the next month. We have been given the responsibility to take her under our wing and show her the ropes here so that will be our mission for the next couple of days. Pray for our guidance with Caitlin and our continual journey here in Nicaragua!

I am today what yesterday has made me; tomorrow I shall be changed by today's experiences.

Sandinistas!

Today was not a very exciting day. As was said in the blog from yesterday, today is the annual Sandinista gathering in Managua. It isn't a very safe time for Americans to be out and after we asked our neighbors if they were staying in and they said yes, we decided it would be best for us to stay in as well. So, we were cooped up in the house all day long. We hear tomorrow won't be as crazy so we are still planning on going to Masatepe to finish the hair cuts we promised.

Today consisted of...
1. Waking up at noon because we stayed up late...again.
2. Eating waffles.
3. Working out.
4. Taking showers.
5. Talking to family/friends on Skype
6. Eating Keydi's delicious food.
7. Blogging.

Told you it wasn't very exciting. Tomorrow we will have a better blog, promise. See, you can breath out a sigh of relief, the Sandinistas did not get us. Although we did hear gun shots and helicopters from outside our windows all day! This place is so insane!!! We love it.

Verbo Church

We woke up to our alarm today! Yay! We got ready for church and picked up our friend Miriam. As we said before, Verbo Church is where the children from Casa Bernabe attend. We love coming here because their are so many familiar faces as well as new people that we are constantly introduced to. We arrived at the church with Miriam and her sister Katherine. The service was lovely as was last week's, but we could not tell you what the sermon was about if our life depended on it. Delanie cannot speak Spanish, and Priscilla couldn't really understand because sometimes these NIcaraguans speak so fast that it's hard to catch every word. Instead we took turns reading our devotional book and bible. So don't worry, we got some spiritual food! After TWO hours of this service, we got a bit antsy. It's not easy to sit through a two hour sermon in the first place, let alone one you can't even understand. Because of this we got a little goofy. We laughed at a possible inappropriate volume but tried very hard to stop (and weren't very successful). We got a chance to talk to our friends from Casa Bernabe after the church service which was really nice.

We want to head over to Casa tomorrow because it is Freydel's 13th birthday! This might not happen though due to the annual nation wide Sandinista fest being celebrated tomorrow and the day after. The Sandinistas are a socialist political group in Nicaragua and they are not very fond of U.S. citizens. It may not be the best idea to leave the house but we are getting in touch with some people to find out what we can do. Don't let this worry you (Ruth and Lynn!) because we will be safe and make wise choices. A little prayer on your part wouldn't hurt, though!

One last note, we just want to thank all of you who actually read this silly blog. Sometimes we feel like it's not being read, but then we realize that's it's a good idea to keep everyone updated on what we are doing. We hope you like it (at least a little!).

I am today what yesterday has made me; tomorrow I shall be changed by today's experiences.

"You've Got A Friend In Me"

Our original plans for today fell through (is anyone surprised?). We were going to host a party for the neighborhood kids by Miriam's house but when we called her she had unexpectedly been called in to work. It was also raining cats and dogs so an outdoor party was not going to happen anyway.

Keydi comes to our house every Saturday to clean and today she brought her daughter Stacey. Stacey is a spunky, sassy little two year old. The thought suddenly occurred to us that we could have a "Stacey fun day". Keydi does not necessarily have the means to take her daughter out the way our kids do in the states. We asked Keydi if she would be okay with giving Stacey a special day to just be a kid. Keydi agreed and off we went.

We first took them to get some good old junk food. Stacey's favorite is a chicken joint called Tip-Top, so Tip-Top it was. She enjoyed it and it was delicious! After eating we took them to the movies to see Toy Story 3. Let me tell you, it is very odd watching a movie with Spanish voices dubbed over! Stacey loved the movie and so did Keydi. We really wanted for Stacey to have a memory of the day so we went to a toy store and bought her a Buzz Lightyear and Woody doll. She fell in love with them instantly and wouldn't let them go for anything in the world. We ended the day with ice cream and dropped them off at home in the early evening.

Although plans were changed (as expected) we felt great about giving Stacey a day to enjoy. We are truly blessed by this little angel and we will miss her tons when we leave Nicaragua! Tomorrow we are going to Verbo Church and this time, we are setting three alarms! Last week's nightmare is not happening again.

I am today what yesterday has made me; tomorrow I shall be changed by today's experiences.

Thank God It's Friday

After yesterday's fiasco we were determined to have a better day. We planned on heading over to Casa Bernabe to spend some time with our friends and join them for their weekly devotional. We actually wanted to spend the night with them but when we called the director and left a message we didn't get a response. We had to change directions with the day so we went to the mall in hopes of finding a nice pair of shoes to purchase for our night guard, Ocatavio. As we told you before, a lot of items here are actually more expensive than in the states. Luckily we found a reasonably priced pair of Nike's and happily bought them. We are pumped that our mission to buy him a good pair of shoes has finally been accomplished!

When our trip to the mall was over we decided to go on an adventure to try to find the TGI Friday's that we never made it to yesterday. Priscilla used her sixth sense of direction and attempted to find it based on this only. When Delanie spotted it she screamed and gave Priscilla a mild heart attack. We were ecstatic about eating here because it felt like home. It wasn't the best food in the world (because let's admit, it never is) but it made us feel warm and fuzzy inside.

When our bellies were full we drove over to the grocery store for the twelfth time this week. We are hosting a party for the neighborhood kids in Miriam's town tomorrow afternoon and we needed to pick up some supplies. Miriam's mom makes pinatas and she suggested that we throw a party for the kids with games, prizes, treats, and of course, pinatas. We are excited to do this and hope that these children will have a blast and enjoy themselves because sometimes it is difficult for kids to be kids here in Nicaragua with all the pressure a lot of them have to live with.

It was a day of running errands but we got a lot accomplished. We are glad that today was a lot better than yesterday! We knew God would provide us with a wonderful day and here it is! Thanks for all of your prayers and support, guys! We miss you!

I am today what yesterday has made me; tomorrow I shall be changed by today's experiences.
